Motivational Mondays

Motivational Mondays

Inspiration is something I am always in search of in my daily life. I find if I have inspiration I have a focus, I have meaning. When I’m inspired by something I see things in a new light, with a different lens. The problem is, inspiration can be hard to come by.

In an ideal situation, we would all have enough time to explore everything we wanted. We would all be able to travel, to journal, to go for long walks on crisp fall days, read every book on our reading lists, spend all day in coffee shops in oversized sweaters. We would have all the time in the world. But we don’t. Life is busy. It’s fast paced. And sometimes I get so caught up in the day to day happenings that We forget to live.

Lately, I’ve been forgetting to take a breath and just be in the moment. It’s stating to get me down, so I’ve found a way to combat this: Motivational Mondays. My goal is to set aside an hour every Monday do something I love. Yes it’s actually written into my calendar. This way I have to take time out of my week to let myself breathe.

This Monday I went for a beautiful fall walk. It is my favorite time of year and I really wanted to spend some time outside in the crisp fall air. I made the perfect playlist and just walked. It was absolutely beautiful and it gave me the clarity I needed to start this week.

I encourage everyone to try and take an hour a week to do something that inspires them, even if you have to pencil it in to your calendar, trust me it will be the best part of your week.

I’m Still Trying to Figure Out How That May Be

I'm Still Trying to Figure Out How That May Be

Last night, my friend Kal and I decided to have an impromptu photo shoot, and she took this photo which I think brilliantly represents my life at the moment. My future is very uncertain and open ended right now and I think this picture depicts the (literal) long road ahead of me. And though it’s been difficult for me to not have a clear cut plan, I have learned to appreciate this moment in time.

I’ve experienced a lot of personal growth in these past few years, and I know the years to come will be marked by even more growth. With so much uncertainty of course comes my emotions. But even when I’m sad I find it to be beautiful. I take solace in my times of sadness, which is something that I’ve never been able to do before.

Finding the beauty in sadness, it of course seems like quite an anomaly, however I’ve found it to be a contenting experience. I am both excited and scared of my future, and this prospect is quite invigorating and duly frightening. I am determined to make these contradictions work in harmony, no matter how unorthodox that may be.

In attempts to anchor this post in clarity, I’ll leave you with this quote from one of my favorite books:

“So this is my life and I want you to know that I am both happy and sad and I’m still trying to figure out how that may be” ~Perks of Being a Wallflower

After All This Time?

After All This Time?

I’m re-reading the Harry Potter Series this summer. This will be the the 7th time I’ve read the series, sooo I think it’s safe to say I’m a pretty big fan of these books. I love re-reading this series because no matter how many times I read the books I get sucked right back into the wizarding world as if it was my first time through them.

I love that these books literally never get old. I still have all the same emotions that I felt the first time I read the words. I still am in awe of Dumbledore’s unwavering wisdom, I still laugh at Fred and George’s tricks, I will always sneer at Malfoy and his gang, I can feel a phantom prickling of my nonexistent scar whenever Voldemort is near, and I smile every time Harry, Ron, and Hermione take me on a new adventure.

When I read any book, I get completely enveloped in the story. I get so invested in the characters and the plot that the story tends to spill out into my reality. But with Harry Potter this phenomenon has actually been magnified. It’s more than a story for me, it has been a guiding force and an epic adventure that has been a part of my life for a really long time.

I grew up alongside the characters, as many people my age have. I started reading HP with my parents when I was in grade 3. That’s 11 years ago people! My whole family has a lot invested in the series and Harry Potter references are frequent in my household (including but not limited to calling each other the dark lord when we are angry, getting time-outs for Avada-Kedavraing each other in imaginary play, and using Dumbledore’s wise words as life lessons on a daily basis).

Needless to say HP is pretty important to me. And it is not just the magical world that I find so mesmerizing (don’t get me wrong the magic part is EPIC) but there is so much value in the content of the books. One does not need to look too deeply before discovering the positive messages that run in every book. One of my longstanding role models to this day happens to be the fictional, yet extremely strong and inspirational Minerva McGonagall. So what if one of my role models happen to be fictional?! I believe that the things we perceive as real, are in fact real in their effects. Besides, each and every character is crafted to perfection and they all hold a special place in my heart.

Though I get so enveloped in these books that fiction and reality become inextricably intertwined with one another, I am a firm believer in this quote by the forever wise Dumbledore:

“Of course it is happening inside your head, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?”

The Life of an Almost Photographer

The Life of an Almost Photographer

SO I went camping this weekend with my friend Kal and her family. The campgrounds were in the middle of the city, yet there were so many trees around that it didn’t seem like we were just seconds away from civilization. I absolutely loved the campgrounds, the walking trails were beautiful and quite frankly it was perfect for practicing a little photography. And let me tell you, we went a little crazy with the picture taking. Between the two of us we took 400 pictures! The photo in set is one of my favorites from the weekend.

I’m Just Floating Along, Waiting for This Weird State to End

I’ve been in a state of nothingness lately. And though it sounds bad, it’s not terrible. I am not sad by any means, I’m actually quite happy. It’s summer, I have the job that I want, I’ve got a pretty rad tan, I have a lot of free time, which all adds up to a positive for me, but I still feel like I’m in a weird state. Days go by and good things happen, sometimes bad things too, but I don’t feel like I’m getting anywhere. Life is happening, but I don’t feel like it’s passing me by either. Time is suspended but all the while it keeps moving on. The best way I can describe what I’m feeling is this: Narnia. Buuuut I don’t feel like I’m the one in Narnia, it’s like someone else has entered Narnia in which case time has stopped in the real world while those who are in Narnia are the only ones who experience a change in time. It’s not like I’m stuck relieving the same day over and over again, each day is different, but time has suspended itself for me. I’m just floating along waiting for this weird state to end.

This is a picture of my yard lamp in winter and it looks suspiciously Narnia-like

Some People Feel the Rain, Others Just Get Wet

Some People Feel the Rain, Others Just Get Wet

It’s been raining a lot lately where I live, which of course I LOVE! I love the sound and smell and feel of rain. Okay really though what’s not to love!? Rain really is the best weather in my opinion!

This picture is the view of the yard from my Parent’s deck. When we were little we would sit under the covered deck whenever there was a big storm and we’d just watch the rain pour down. I think these fond memories are part of the reason I love the rainy weather so much.

It doesn’t always rain where I live, so I’ve found a bit of a substitute for those days when I want a rainy day, but the rain gods just aren’t paying attention to my rain dance! This amazing website: lets you listen to rain sounds whenever you want! Needless to say, I use this website a LOT! I play the rain sounds with music with it too, usually Bon Iver or Ben Howard. So hopefully this post has inspired you to make your not so rainy day, rainy!

Sing Out the Silence, Fill For Ever and Ever the Emptiness

Sing Out the Silence, Fill For Ever and Ever the Emptiness

I’ve been reminiscing on my trip to the UK lately and I wanted to share this photo. At first it seems like nothing special, but to me this photo is one of my favorite pictures because beyond this arch was a courtyard. I remember the calm quiet of the courtyard was such a contrast from the bustling streets of Edinburgh. And my favorite part of this courtyard was that the tiles on the ground were engraved with quotes. The title of this post is a quote that I saw and fell in love with by James Allan Ford. If you ever end up on the streets of Edinburgh, I strongly suggest that you take time to pop in and out of the quaint little Closes ❤

Just to be clear, I spend a normal amount of time in coffee shops

Just to be clear, I spend a normal amount of time in coffee shops

It would appear that I seem to spend a lot of time in coffee shops. But just to be clear, I spend a normal amount of time in coffee shops, however I just happen to blog a lot while sipping on teas which I think may give off the impression that I freaking live in these places.

But if there’s one thing I’ve learned through blogging, it is that on the internet you can make yourself appear in any way you wish. I’m not saying that I’m just a facade, but I think it’s important to realize that there’s a person behind every computer screen who leads a completely normal life. This is just an interesting fact for me because I’ve always been the person who follows other people on social media, I’ve never been one to be followed.

So having my own blog has been demystifying for me, but not in a bad way. I like being on this side of the computer, watching my life unfold both on the screen and in life.

~You Found it in the City~

Normally I’m not one for spontaneity, but when it’s 10:00 am and my best friend calls me up asking if I want to go to the city for a day of walking in and out of coffee shops and record stores, I am always in! So I spent today with my two best friends surrounded by the city life. As we were city loving, we came across this door which is all kinds of perfect. I mean it’s red with an anchor handle, it doesn’t get much better than that!
